Do you want to use Streetmap with other ArcPad functions?

Now that ArcPad 8 offers a free copy of Streetmap data for Europe as well as North America there will be plenty of situations where the data will be useful. Other countries such as Australia, NZ, Singapore etc are becoming available from Navigate. (www.navigate.com.au/navmap.htm)

So what devices are capable of running Streetmap for ArcPad?

If you want to run all ArcPad functions with Streetmap such as GPS, camera and data collection/editing, then you should be aware of the memory requirements. The above screenshot shows a device running the Streetmap extension with 15MB free. The low memory warning appears when there is 1MB free.

The following hardware will enable the above scenario.
  • Desktop, laptop, tablet running Vista or XP
  • Trimble Juno SC (WM 6.1)
  • HTC Harris US Census device (WM 5.0)
  • HTC TYN TYN II (WM 6.0)
  • Samsung Omnia i900 (WM 6.1)

There may be other devices that can load Streetmap data and leave 10MB of memory free. We are constantly looking for such devices as we evaluate the models forwarded to us by manufacturers.
So if you don't have any of the above devices you may still be able to run Streetmap for ArcPad by having very little other ArcPad functionality enabled. To do this you need to turn off all extensions except ArcPad Streetmap and set the default button size to 1. You should also consider using the Data Extrator software provided on the ArcPad 8 Streetmap Data DVD to extract the data on the DVD down to State(USA)/Country(Europe) level.

ArcPad in the News

An article promiently acknowledging the successful deployment of ArcPad in the Address Canvassing project of the U.S. 2010 Census and with the aftermath of the Victorian Bushfires appears in today's copy of the Melbourne "The Age" newspaper.
Accompanying the article is an impressively large colour photgraph of a Trimble Juno SC and Elvin's thumb.
The article can be found on page 6 of today's paper or online at:

ArcPad in the key of ........

Each windows mobile device has a selection of buttons, some that are configurable and some that are not. Understanding which ones are configurable and what they are called is difficult, but important when you want to assign an ArcPad action to them.

The KeyWatch application simply shows you the internal name of each button that you press on the device.

KeyWatch
· Copy the executable to your windows mobile (5 or above) device and tap it, to run
· Press a button on the device and its name will display in the white box
· Press each button and note the name of each

The important part of the name is the bit at the end. F1, F2 should be self explanatory. Application keys are listed as APP1, APP2 (although are referred to as A1, A2 inside ArcPad). Other keys have self explanatory names like RIGHT, LEFT, UP, DOWN, RETURN.

Assigning actions to keys in ArcPad
Generally, you can assign ArcPad actions to Function and Application keys. For example, when you create a custom tool you have the option to assign a shortcut. The shortcut is the name of a hardware button.

Hardware differences
Unfortunately all Windows Mobile devices are not the same.

· Some devices have application keys (A1, A2, etc)
· Some devices have function keys (F1, F2, etc)
· Some devices have both
· There is no consistent pattern to which keys / devices work for applets
· you must have an F2 key to highlight the ArcPad toolbars
· camera shortcut doesn’t appear to work on any devices in ArcPad 8 (this is a known bug)

A text document and the Keywatch application is available for download from the ArcScripts section of the ESRI.com. Just search usingthe key word KeyWatch
